Global color swatches are colors saved in Illustrator so they’re linked across all objects that use them. When you apply such a swatch to a shape’s fill or stroke, editing that swatch updates every object using it, keeping the entire design color-consistent. This is incredibly useful when you’re working with a brand palette or making a color-wide change—change the swatch once, and all instances update automatically, rather than hunting down every object that uses that color. To make a swatch global, create a new swatch and enable the Global option; all edits to that swatch propagate to every object that relies on it. The idea behind a local color (which only affects one object) or a swatch that can’t be edited doesn’t provide the same synchronized updates, and isn’t how global color works.
